What should you visit in Jerez de la Frontera?
Jerez de la Frontera has one of the most charming and best preserved historic quarters in Andalusia. The heritage of different cultures as well as the passing of the years in history make this city a must-see in the province.
Santo Domingo Clauses
A jewel in the Gothic architecture of Andalusia. It was a Muslim fortification, and King Alfonso X the Wise gave it to the Dominicans, who began work on the convent. The disentailment and the different governments in our country led to its expulsion. Since 1983 it has been owned by the municipality, where events, exhibitions and other types of meetings are held, thanks to its spacious halls and outdoor area.
Alcazar of Jerez
It is perhaps the most emblematic monument of the city, dating from the 12th and 12th centuries, preserving all its beauty. It was built at the same time as the wall that surrounded the city (of which sections remain), with Muslim influence. Its function was military and defensive. In the 17th century, the Oil Mill and the Palace of Villavicencio were built. The Alcázar of Jerez has a beautiful parade ground, gardens, towers, mosques, Arab baths, walls... Strolling among its orange trees, with the sound of the water from the fountains, is a delight.
"The Gallo Azul" (Blue Cock)
It is an icon in Jerez de la Frontera. This emblematic building is located right in the centre of the city. It has a classic, circular shape. The traditional brick, typical of the Sevillian architect Aníbal Gonzalez, can be seen in the Plaza de España in Seville and in the Jerez Station, both by the same author.
After years of disuse, it is now a restaurant.
Wine tourism
Wine is a key part of the history of Jerez. Its history and culture are linked to it. We recommend you to visit the different wineries in Jerez de la Frontera, enjoying its gastronomy. As well as museums, vineyards and restaurants inspired by sherry.
